Elyssa was extremely comforting and talked us through what to expect
Elyssa Jacob was the first nurse we met when our daughter’s nine-hour open-heart surgery was complete and we were finally able to see her again. Both M and I didn't know what to expect as we were told B would be intubated overnight. To see your child in that state is one of the most difficult things to do, you feel completely helpless.
Elyssa was extremely comforting and talked us through what to expect and reassured us that if we had any questions to please ask. Elyssa was only with us for a few hours that first day, but we knew we wanted to see her again the next day. Sure enough, we were fortunate enough to have Elyssa back the following day, this was a big day as B was going to get the breathing tube removed.
Elyssa took all precautions leading up to that as she knew the previous day B got agitated and tried to grab at her tube so when the Propofol was turned off she was anticipating that B may do that again. When B started to wake up, Elyssa was right there and talked to B so calmly and explained what was going on and what was going to happen. This kept B so calm and B even gave her a quick smile prior to being extubated.
Elyssa helped coach B through not only that process, but also the removal of her chest tubes, foley catheter, and getting up for the first time. Elyssa was a great cheerleader for B and was always encouraging her and praising her for her progress.
On our third day, we were elated to hear that Elyssa would be with us again as we had all built a great relationship with her. Elyssa is an amazing nurse and has a special gift in how she provides comfort and support to not only the patient but also the parents.
