Randi often takes the time to sing with her patients and families
Randi Frye greets everyone she passes and meets with a huge smile and hello. With many people, the courtesy of saying "how are you?" in passing is often just that, a courtesy. When Randi asks "how are you?", there is a genuine interest and concern in your answer. Whether a patient, fellow coworker, or visitor; she is quick to make you feel welcome and important. She is upbeat and optimistic no matter how busy she is.
Randi puts patient care first and is frequently creative in how to make a person's day a little better. There was a patient on the unit that had been on the ventilator for quite some time and not improving. The patient’s family was coming to visit. Randi had found out that the patient typically has his head shaved. Randi took the time to shave his head and facial hair so that his family could visit with him like they always saw him.
Randi also takes an active role in her patient's spiritual healing. When on the unit, she is not just a nurse, but also a singer. Randi is famous for her beautiful rendition of Amazing Grace and often takes the time to sing with her patients and families, especially at the end of life.
Randi is quick to offer a helping hand to coworkers. She is never one to complain about assignments or taking on additional responsibilities such as charge and orienting. She takes the lead when nursing students are present on the unit by proactively engaging them in patient care and procedures happening throughout the department.
Randi is a role model of the UPMC values and exemplifies our Mission and Vision by putting our most vulnerable patients at the center of everything she does.
