Kari is compassionate beyond measure and cares for the patients and families of the center with intensity.
One of our long-term Hemo patients at Upper Valley Kidney Center was adamant about discontinuing dialysis. It was about a month, in our core team meeting, it came up that Mr. G. had missed 2 treatments in a row. Kari called him to ensure he was all right and he expressed that he does not want to continue dialysis and that he is “just tired.” She knew his history of SAD (seasonal affective disorder) so she reached out to his son to discuss with him. Kari worked with the son and the patient, spending a lot of time on the phone with both of them and ensuring he was still taking his anti-depressant and offering compassionate support to the family, regardless of the decision.
Kari went out of her way to ensure they both had all the information needed to make an informed decision and received many phone calls from the patient’s son with questions and concerns.
The patient ultimately chose to continue dialysis and return to the facility. I feel that if Kari had not taken the time to express her concern for the patient and follow up, the outcome would have been much different. Kari was able to do this through the trust and rapport she builds with Mr. G and the compassion she displays to all of our patients. This may seem like a small example, but this is how Kari shows up for her patients every day. Kari is a shining example of a nurse that makes the entire facility brighter when she walks in the door every morning and we are extremely lucky to have her as our clinical coordinator at UVKC.
