To have someone who has the capability to make you feel "at home" in the worst situation possible, is an amazing nurse.
In November, I had to go to Labor and Delivery at Kettering Hospital, but unfortunately due to a miscarriage. This was an extremely difficult time for my fiancé and I. Having to go to labor and delivery was difficult, due to being able to hear healthy baby heart beats. There was no way I thought this experience could get any better. The second nurse that entered my treatment area introduced herself. The FIRST thing she had said was "I'm sorry for your loss.". She was the only one that entire visit who said that to us. To me that meant the world because, I felt acknowledged. It wasn’t just about the healthy babies that day, my nurse made it about me as well, which was exactly what I needed. She had also told me she understood the hurt I was going through, due to unfortunately being through the same experience in the past. Jennifer made me feel so calm, and so taken care of. She also made me feel like the feelings I was having, were okay. During the procedure, Jennifer was the nurse with me. I don’t remember that procedure due to being asleep, but I do remember her being the first one I saw and heard when I woke up. I requested my fiancé and she went right away to get him. She did EVERYTHING, in her power to keep me comfortable; getting my fiancé, requesting pain meds, warm blankets, ice AND soda. Not only was she taking care of me but my fiancé as well, constantly asking if she could get him anything. When signing my discharge papers, my nurse handed me a few pamphlets on miscarriage as well as a pin. The pin had 2 baby feet, a halo and angle wings. At that point, I was mentally and physically exhausted, and the tears started all over again. She could have easily given me a pat on the back and withdrawn herself from the situation, but she did the complete opposite. As soon as my emotions started hers did as well. She could have tried to hide them, or just exit the area, but she didn’t and that meant the world to me. She took off her glasses and hugged me while me both cried. To have someone who has the capability to make you feel "at home" in the worst situation possible, is an amazing nurse. She is what every nurse needs to be. The amount of compassion Jennifer has is off the charts. Mentally this is very hard on me, but having her there at the hospital, and just feeling so much love and care from her, changed the ENTIRE experience. If Jennifer had not walked in my room that day, I honestly don’t know how different this all would have been for me. Because during such an emotional time, support is all you need, and that was exactly what she gave my fiancé and myself. We are forever grateful that there are nurses like her. To be able to change such an ugly time in one’s life, to something that helps bring closure, is a super power. My nurse was able to be so open with us about her personal experiences. I know how hard being vulnerable is, but sometimes all a patient needs is to know they aren’t alone, and to know, they aren't the only ones who have felt this way. I will forever cherish our experience with her. We look forward to the day where we are able to return to labor and delivery for a much healthier situation. Jennifer deserves this recognition so much more!!!
