She displays a quiet, calm demeanor but you know she is working furiously behind the scenes to uphold a spectacular level of care.
I was brought to RMC in early April. I had a positive COVID test. After experiencing sinus/allergy symptoms and no fever for two weeks, I assumed I would have an easy recovery as I am in good health.
Things changed fast. I had passed out, was dehydrated, could not get my O2 in the 90s, and had extremely low blood pressure. To my family, my confusion and speech issues looked like a stroke. I was vomiting, unable to walk, and I could not answer simple questions. An ambulance was called. The scariest moment was realizing that I was ALONE, and it was terrifying.
This is when an angel appeared. Kathryn DeLucia is the best example of nursing, compassion, and patient advocacy I have ever seen. She displays a quiet, calm demeanor but you know she is working furiously behind the scenes to uphold a spectacular level of care. She is patient, explains procedures, answers a million questions, is gentle but firm in her examination. You know you are in good hands when she is at your side. What amazes me most is her confidence and her level of education at such a tender age. She displays a bedside manner that would usually take years to perfect. I especially saw this as I had 3 roommate changes in two days. Each patient was old with many other complications on top of COVID. She didn't miss a beat. Each patient was treated meticulously. She was patient, loving, kind, and effective. She has so much to give.
COVID is terrifying and Hospitals are scary. I am so glad that Kathryn was there to hold my hand throughout this week. Please consider honoring her for the amazing nurse that she is. I hope she knows how much she helped me. She is amazing!
