He took excellent care of him but it was his ability to reach him that mattered.
The patient has a speech and cognitive disorder and his caregiver was also at the bedside. He recognizes Joseph for excellence in nursing and for showing compassion and overall nursing care. It meant a lot to the patient that in all of his other hospitalizations, he has never had a nurse check in on him when he wasn't assigned. Joseph had him as a patient one day and was an excellent nurse. He always made sure the patient and his caregiver were both ok and didn't need anything. He took excellent care of him but it was his ability to reach him that mattered. He took the time to talk with the patient, to find out about things he liked to do, and what made him feel better and made it easier for him to be here. Then the next time Joseph worked he wasn't assigned to the patient but, came back in to check on the patient and see how he was doing. He sat down with the patient and they watched sports together. That meant the world to the patient. Sports, all sports is everything to the patient and when Joseph showed that level of kindness, it was pretty special.
