Carolyn’s tirelessness, selflessness, and compassion were noted by all.
Carolyn went above and beyond during an unprecedented time by serving as our first and only Charge Nurse (at the time) at our COVID+ unit for five months during the pandemic. Our COVID+ unit serves as the dedicated unit for, not only one but two Divisions across the broader Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Even though these patients were only treated at the COVID+ unit for a limited amount of time, Carolyn treated each patient as if they were a permanent patient of hers.
One of the many stories that come to mind started at the end of a very long, stressful day. Carolyn and one of the PCT’s were winding up their last 3rd shift patients of the day, getting ready to leave after an already-long, stress-ridden day, when a physician requested to send a very sick patient for immediate treatment. Given the fact that the patient’s transportation couldn’t get there for another two hours meant the earliest they could start the patient’s 4-hour treatment would be that evening. Without skipping a beat, Carolyn responded by saying they’d be waiting for him. Additionally, when the sole PCT initially refused to stay, Carolyn talked her into staying, following it up with, “Come on, we’ll have fun. I’ll buy you dinner!”
Carolyn, initially scheduled to finish up at 5:00 pm, finally closed-out the clinic at 12:30 am, tired, but still wearing that smile of hers. As a result, the patient, who had just been discharged from a long stay in the hospital, was able to avoid going back into the hospital for treatment, and his family was beyond grateful. Carolyn’s tirelessness, selflessness, and compassion were noted by all – the patient’s family, the physician, our leadership team, and other teammates. Beyond that, when recognized for her efforts, Carolyn humbly stated that she was just doing her job – caring for patients.
