There were moments during my stay that just the cheery smile from Aishah was the best part of the day.
I recently spent a week in UCLH and for the most part I was on T10N. I had various nurses and N/A’s come and goes, but Aishahh was one who I was asking when she was on next. I’m happily writing this from home as I complete my recovery but thinking back across the time spent, it would be criminal to not recognize Aishah as a someone who deserves brilliant feedback. All too often people are quick to complain but are nowhere to be seen when the good, or in Aishah’s case the great, need commending.

In my bay, I had a lady with dementia who needed a lot of 1-on-1 care. When other nurses were around she was a patient, but when Aishah was around, she treated her just like she would want to be treated herself with buckets of compassion. Even when she was extremely busy, her patience didn’t waiver.

I’m 32 and I have multiple conditions and when I ended up in T10N with a nasty infection that caused sepsis, I’d never been so scared and having Aishah as my nurse was what made my recovery a lot easier.

My brother is a Charge Nurse up at ULHT, and my mum died in service whilst as a pediatric secretary for two consultants. I also did 2 years for RDASH, so I have first-hand experience of working for the NHS and being submerged within it, and I know the love it takes every day to walk in and keep a smile on your face.

There were moments during my stay that just the cheery smile from Aishah was the best part of the day. Having your face swell up, hardly able to talk and only being able to get the pain under control because someone like Aishah was keeping on top of my drug chart and coming with painkillers as soon as I could medically have them.

Aishah had at one point 2 (obvious) dementia patients and the whole CD round to complete with the patient alarm bells ringing around her and low of staff because of nurses needed off ward and other reasons. Aishah was calm, cool, and collected throughout. Professional to the extreme; never once complaining.

During my stay, a porter didn’t turn up and I missed my appointment to remove my infection, Aishah was clearly upset that it has happened, and she checked my next transport was rebooked several times. She even offered to personally walk me there during her break if she had to so I didn’t miss my appointment. Thankfully, her transport checking meant she didn’t have to!

I’m also partially deaf and when Aishah was around if I didn’t get everything or they forgot to social distance and remove the mask, she would tell me afterwards. Some people forget about those that can’t hear very well and lip-read with new mandatory masks and it’s pretty tiring reminding and telling someone. So knowing I had someone who I could count on meant the world.
And a message to Aishah.....Thank you, as lovely as you are, and a truly amazing nurse, I don’t plan on seeing you again or at least I hope not! Thank you for being the exemplar of what the NHS is about. You rock
