Josh would talk with her, joke with her, ease her mind, and make sure that she had a smile on her face when he was around.
I have had the opportunity to care for a particular patient several times throughout her stay in the ICU at Community Hospital Anderson. During this time, I was able to see the care that was provided to her by a number of different nurses on the unit. Although they all did a fabulous job caring for her, Josh really stood out among them.
It was evident that her health was declining rapidly, and her prognosis was very poor. Her oxygen saturations continued to decrease despite the efforts that were being made. I watched her hope, emotion, and will-to-fight drift away right before my eyes. Unfortunately, the pandemic has made situations like hers become a normal occurrence. This has made many staff members avoid forming relationships with these patients in fear of the heartache that comes with their passing. Josh, even with the anticipation of potential sadness that he would feel, became quite close with her.
Every time he would enter her room, he would have a smile on his face. Josh would talk with her, joke with her, ease her mind, and make sure that she had a smile on her face when he was around. He worked diligently to instill hope into her that there was still a chance for recovery. Even after hearing time and time again that her prognosis was extremely poor, he encouraged her to fight - while also being mindful of her wishes. She was on continuous BiPaP at 100% for days, and everyone was scared to take risks and wean her oxygen down. It made her feel as if they had given up on her.
When Josh cared for her, though, he would take risks. He would change her position, wean her oxygen down, and implement every intervention possible to help improve her condition. In the nurse’s station, he would watch her monitor closely to make adjustments as necessary. He would literally jump for joy when he would see her oxygen saturation improve - even if it was just by 2-3%. Josh cared for this patient as if she was one of his family members. He helped her escape the brutal reality that she was facing, and he did his absolute best to put her on a path towards recovery. If I were in her position, I would be thrilled to have Josh as my nurse.
Although all of the nurses on the unit are nothing short of amazing, Josh really showcased his excellence with this patient. His willingness to form a relationship with her and take risks really outshined the rest. I am so glad that I have the privilege to learn from and work alongside him. The care that he provides to his patients is something truly special. He is such a great asset to the team, and any person would be lucky to be cared for by him!
As I am writing this, she is still fighting for recovery. When speaking to her about this award, she mentioned that if she were well enough to nominate Josh, she would in a heartbeat. I do not know what her outcome will be, but I do know that Josh will be someone whom she will always remember - simply because he made her feel safe, loved, and heard.
