In the end when his wife died peacefully, he told Vickie how much of a difference she made in his life and his wife’s last days on earth.
Vickie was recognized as a silent angel who comes to work every day with smiles and a positive attitude.
Recently Vickie had a very ill patient who was dying, in pain, and unresponsive. The husband of this patient had not heard the physicians correctly when he was told about her metastatic cancer. He thought they said if she received treatments, she would live many more years, which was not the case.
Vickie took so much time to sit with this patient and her husband to talk to him regarding realistic expectations including the diagnosis and treatments the patient was receiving. Vickie took the time to pray with him. She was able to help him finally realize that the patient was not going to recover and allowed his wife to receive pain medication and to be a DNR. In the end when his wife died peacefully, he told Vickie how much of a difference she made in his life and his wife’s last days on earth. This to him was the ultimate definition of a Nurse.
