This team celebrated with the COVID patients who were able to discharge home and wept with the patients and families who passed in our care.
The Medical B team was on the frontline of caring for our initial inpatient COVID patients at PSVMC and has continued to care for the majority of these patients through this last year. This team is truly heroic in how they stepped up to care for this new patient population. When COVID first arrived at PSVMC, there were so many unknowns, and the Medical B team pushed their own fear and anxiety aside in order to ensure their patients were well cared for.
They had to quickly become experts in infection prevention and donning and doffing. This team had to assume additional support roles when there were strict limits on patient contact. They did this by supporting and helping each other and by offering peer-to-peer feedback and assistance. They spoke up for safety to their manager, other leaders, and to each other. This team went above and beyond assisting these isolated patients on how to connect with their families virtually. This team created ways such as calling patients in their rooms and making eye contact through the windows to communicate with their patients in a compassionate manner while still following infection prevention protocols. This team adjusted their practice daily to adapt to the rapidly changing COVID-19 guidelines. This team celebrated with the COVID patients who were able to discharge home and wept with the patients and families who passed in our care. Words cannot express what it means to show up and be a Med B RN knowing that every day for over a year, you would be caring for the COVID patient population who is part of such a significant event in history. These are only a few of the reasons why the Medical B team deserves this award.
