Janice was prepping this woman for surgery and quickly realized she was unable to care for herself.
Yesterday we had a very pleasant older woman admit for a preoperative carotid endarterectomy. Janice Krapfl was prepping this woman for surgery and quickly realized she was unable to care for herself, as she had some concerning hygiene/self-care issues. This woman had no shower at home, her washing machine was broken, and her caretaker had passed two years ago. The ambulatory staff proceeded to give the woman a shower in the department and combed through her hair which was long and matted. Multiple runs were made to 4W for shampoo, and the patient told Janice to just shave her hair off. Janice maintained her dignity and convinced her to trim it. She was able to cut her hair which looked professional, and she even cut some very fitting bangs!

This patient’s toenails were long, curled, and unkempt. Janice and the other staff purchased new boots and socks. They split the cost among each other because they said it was the right thing to do.

It doesn't end there. They arranged for her clothes to be washed on the skilled unit, so they were clean and ready for discharge. Janice arranged for case management to get involved, and got podiatry scheduled to visit her to care for her feet the next week. They did all of this with such tact and professionalism that ensured the patient felt comfortable and not ashamed or embarrassed.
