Helen Kim is the epitome of a dedicated, compassionate, knowledgeable, and skilled RN.
Helen Kim is the epitome of a dedicated, compassionate, knowledgeable, and skilled RN. Helen is the consummate team player and is always willing to lend a helping hand with patient assignments, admits, and discharges, all the while giving expert care within her own assignment. She is computer savvy and so helpful in aiding others to navigate the system. Helen is an incredible asset to our unit as well as to every nurse who works with her.
Helen has been a primary nurse to many, many infants as well as their families over the years. She builds a strong bond and earns their trust as each family acknowledges and appreciates her expertise in caring for their baby. She has navigated the system to acquire car seats, strollers, medical equipment, clothes, and toys when needed. She is always designing picture mementos to post around the bedside and room to keep the babies entertained as well as charting milestones for the proud moms and dads. She is a member of the Discharge/CPR Family Teaching Team and customizes her teaching according to an infant's discharge needs and the parent's understanding.
Helen constantly finds projects around the unit to keep our NICU running smoothly. She designed a clip-on, badge-sized "frequently called list" for each of us which is used multiple times a day by all. She continually updates the names and numbers, as necessary. She has created, as well as re-designed, multiple binders, sheet dividers, and unit notices to keep our unit up-to-date and track data, as necessary.
One example is organizing our banked breast mile and human milk additive shipments to keep track of lot and serial numbers for state auditing. Helen is the first one to remember special occasions by organizing potlucks, getting cards signed, collecting money, going shopping, wrapping gifts as well as getting everyone involved in the celebrations and events. The most recent gifting fundraised $2,200 to be donated to UCSF Leukemia Fund in memory of a co-worker's child who lost his battle to leukemia.
Some of her many professional accomplishments include Brains Super User, Car seat Certification, Discharge/CPR Instructor, Former Northern CA Association of Neonatal Nurses Board Member, Mentor to new staff/students, NRP Instructor, Relief Charge Nurse, Staff Nurse IV. Our NICU continually benefits from the effort and hard work afforded by Helen. Her optimism, foresight, empathy, and compassion are truly admirable, and we are very lucky she is here. I am not alone in my gratitude for Helen and have included 3 pages of signatures of fellow nurses who appreciate Helen and all she does and believe she is a true DAISY Nurse.
