I cannot express in words how much I appreciated Megan’s care and kindness in just stopping by to see how Dad was doing.
Recently my father was under care at Good Sam in Kearney. My mother was unable to be with him due to being COVID positive herself. I became the support person. Megan was one of the first nurses I encountered. She immediately took me under her wing. Not only was she caring for her patient, she was also caring for his family. Megan took the time to explain what was going on. She explained the equipment, medications, expectations, treatments, etc. The patient was having problems coming in and out of sedation, which was particularly difficult to watch. Megan checked with me to ensure I was okay. Her duty was to her patient, but she compassionately cared for us family members also. My dad continued to worsen each day. Due to shifts, I did get to see Megan again. It was very hard on the family to communicate with a different staff every other day, especially with conditions worsening. Friday, after her shift had ended, Megan stopped by Dad's window. It had been a particularly difficult day. I wanted to run to her and hug her, but could not due to PPE and COVID (I cared for her safety). I stepped outside and Megan talked to me. We didn’t discuss his care as I knew she was not assigned to him that day. But it was nice to have a friendly face stop by and check on me when family could not due to restrictions. I cannot express in words how much I appreciated Megan’s care and kindness in just stopping by to see how Dad was doing. Every day I would hope Megan would be his nurse that day. We never did see Megan again, but as I saw the DAISY Award information throughout the hospital, I knew I wanted to nominate her. Megan is a caring, knowledgeable, compassionate person who not only delivers quality care to her patients but also includes the family in the care plan also.
