Jen is not only an extraordinary team member, but she is an extraordinary mentor.
Jennifer Ransford hired me in 2014 as a CN1 on Barnard 6 at Morton Plant Hospital. She was currently a manager on that unit. At that time, I was an associate degree nurse, and my only experience was in outpatient dialysis. Jen paired me with a preceptor that promoted my development as an acute care nurse. Jen communicated in such a way that perpetuated instant trust. She not only instilled BayCare values in me, but she also exuded these values. She led the unit with such a presence that inspired not only me but the entire team.
I quickly enrolled in a BSN program in hopes of growing within the BayCare organization I had grown to love. At this time, she was promoted to Director of Nursing. Even though she was no longer my manager, she supported me through my BSN and even spent hours precepting me in her new role. I shadowed her around the hospital in complete awe. She greeted every team member she encountered by name and supported every department. I watched her analyze and think through complex situations and bring calm to the team. After my time came to an end with her and I graduated with my BSN, she encouraged me to continue my education.
I started my MSN in leadership and management at the same school she attended. I found myself emulating her because she was such an inspiration. She supported me through that degree and let me shadow her once again. I also observed the inner workings of the hospital from a nursing leader’s perspective. I was promoted to a Patient Care Leader shortly after I started my degree. I know for a fact I would have never obtained this job if she had not encouraged me to be the best I could be. I had the confidence to grow and lead because of her. I finished my MSN and again was promoted to Advanced Patient Care Leader. She has since been promoted once again to CNO, and I was not surprised by this.
From the bedside to the boardroom, Jen has been a brilliant example of what the BayCare values embody. She promotes clinical excellence and does so through our values and hard work. She is not a leader that orders things to be done, she partners with the healthcare team and works with them to achieve goals.
Jen is not only an extraordinary team member, but she is an extraordinary mentor. She gracefully demands an environment that fosters care and compassion. She encourages professional development and motivates everyone she encounters to share her vision of clinical excellence.
Lastly, my favorite part about Jen is regardless of her title, she is always available for anyone in need. Having her available makes this stressful healthcare environment we are in that much more meaningful. Leaders like this are few and far between. I am so appreciative for the experience I have gained at BayCare and for the effort Jen has put into cultivating my professional development. I am eternally grateful for the impact she has had on my life and career.
