Scott came in to check on me when he had free time, to add words of comfort. I felt a little better each time I saw him.
I would like to nominate Scott Blackman for the DAISY Award. I had surgery for an ileostomy in October. This surgery by itself was stressful for a 72-year-old woman. Even in my worst pain, Scott showed me respect, compassion, and nursing skill.
Scott came in to check on me when he had free time, to add words of comfort. I felt a little better each time I saw him. He listened carefully to my concerns and prayers. He gave me hope and the confidence that I could handle this new way of life.
Scott also made me laugh. He knew I had named my new Stoma "Polly Poo Poo". I figured that if I had to live with her for the rest of my life, she should have a name. We laughed over the name I chose.
Later I was informed that the feeding supplement I may need was in short supply due to the hurricane in Puerto Rico. I was frightened and depressed with this information because, after 9 days, my digestive system was not functioning properly.
One morning, when Scott had a break, he brought his cell phone to me. On it, was a short skit done in the 80s by the comedian Monty Python. In the skit, Monty was trying to revive his dead parrot. The parrot's name was "Polly". We all laughed hysterically. This act of extra kindness brought me out of my depression.
Thank you, Scott!
