Margaret is the ultimate role model for us and getting to learn from her excites us for our futures and professional growth.
We have gotten to know Margaret very well working beside her over the past year since she moved here from HUMC. Margaret is certified in med-surg, and in holistic nursing. She has her master’s degree and is a part of the Magnet writing committee and holistic nursing committee. We are very blessed to have a leader and a mentor like Margaret. She is the ultimate role model for us and getting to learn from her excites us for our futures and professional growth. She has created a light and a positive change on the unit. I have worked on this unit since I graduated from nursing school and it was not until Margaret began as our leader, that we have accomplished so many wonderful things.
The staff turnover rate for 2020 (which was Margaret’s first year of being our manager) was at 0%. Prior to this, our turnover rate was high. We started to have fun and celebrate one another’s accomplishments. The team member recognition is through the roof. We began an end of life committee to help us better care for our patients and families, as well as ourselves. This committee meets every month and contains members of the multidisciplinary team. We have lunch, tell stories, and learn about different bodily functions when someone is nearing the end of life. Through this committee we have greatly enhanced our care of hospice and end of life patients, and how to mentally deal with the amount of death we deal with on a day to day basis.
The sense of belonging and family on this unit is astonishing. Our HCAP scores have improved tremendously, and we are in the green for every category. These are only a small handful of positive change that Margaret has created on our unit. Not only does Margaret hold all the above-mentioned qualifications and accomplishments, but she is also the most caring, nurturing, professional, and compassionate leader I have ever had the pleasure of working with. She is always willing to lend a helping hand and an open ear. She possesses qualities that I could only wish to possess one day and hope to learn from her.
This is Margaret's 2nd time being honored, first as an individual DAISY Award and this time as a DAISY Nurse Leader Award!
