It was no surprise that Jamie did not hesitate when she was presented with an opportunity to brighten a patient’s day.
We would like to nominate Jamie Hall as a DAISY Award recipient. Jamie is a dedicated nurse and Infection Preventionist, who is constantly going above and beyond expectations. It was no surprise that Jamie did not hesitate when she was presented with an opportunity to brighten a patient’s day. Jamie dressed up as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz for the Children’s Hospital Halloween parade and completed beautiful Wizard of Oz themed artwork.
After the parade, as if she were led by a higher power, Jamie followed the yellow brick road to the Cancer Center. She felt a nudge, a pull, a calling, to walk over to the Cancer Center for some reason, but she was not sure why. Once there, a gentleman approached her and asked if she would visit a particular patient, explaining how special it would be because of this patient’s love for the Wizard of Oz and the fact that she had recently faced many health and personal challenges. This sweet patient could not believe that Jamie, as the perfect Dorothy, was there to visit her and it absolutely made her day. The patient went on to describe her extensive Wizard of Oz collection and explained that she named her daughter Dorothy because she was such a huge fan. She also made sure her husband took plenty of pictures and posted a note of love and appreciation on social media. With such a strong bond between patient and nurse, Jamie and this patient connected after discharge. Jamie offered all of her Wizard of Oz artwork to this patient only to find out afterward that the patient’s daughter had passed away, hence why her visit with “Dorothy” was so special.
This is just one example of the kindness and compassion Jamie exemplifies on a daily basis. She is also very humble. If asked about this specific occasion, Jamie describes it as she being the one who was blessed by the experience and grateful that she had the opportunity to bring someone else joy.
