It was “all hands on deck” without question, without complaint, and without hesitation. The patient received the utmost benefits.
I would like to nominate the awesome team of nurses, monitor techs, and burn techs serving our patients in the Lion’s Burn Care Center. While they are always self-sacrificing, patient-centered, and continuously exceed our expectations, one specific encounter this past weekend deserves recognition. It pertains to a critically ill patient housed in the Burn ICU with approximately 20 percent total body surface area second and third-degree burns to all four extremities, and his face after he was found down behind a shed, burned.
We have been treating this patient for his extensive burn wounds and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). The patient has high ventilator requirements and could not safely tolerate transport to the operating room for his much-needed burn debridement in order to stop the cycle of inflammation and infection, which is the etiology of his ARDS. I planned a bedside debridement for this patient in conjunction with our charge nurse, Anesthesia, Burn Techs, and Nursing Team. Our Burn Team quickly mobilized. Our monitor tech coordinated the delivery of much-needed surgical instruments and supplies to our Burn ICU, while our charge nurse mobilized a number of our nurses and burn techs in coordination with Anesthesia. The burn team ensured we had available blood supplies ready at the bedside, in addition to the preparation of a sterile room to simulate the OR environment.

After debridement, his leukocytosis began to resolve, and he is successfully weaning from the ventilator. The Burn Team’s consistent and ongoing dedication to our patients is why our Burn Center remains the best Burn Center in the state.
