Claudia is always smiling, has an infectious laugh, and a sunny disposition.
I have worked with this RN for five years. She recently lost her ex-husband’s sister and ex-mother-in-law due to COVID-19. She shared her story with me and our colleagues as we cried together for her. Her ex-husband couldn't bear to go see his mother as she was dying due to COVID-19 but she assured him it was ok and offered to go and be with her as she was dying and he had recently lost his sister two weeks prior. She comforted him and took his place as an advocate.
What kind of person/nurse is she? Claudia is always smiling, has an infectious laugh, and a sunny disposition. She is a team player and is always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. She volunteered to take the place of her ex-husband as his mother was gravely ill and showed immeasurable compassionate care to a dying COVID-19 patient on life support so she did not have to die alone as her daughter had. She was an advocate for this person in the most selfless of ways.
At her bedside, Claudia and her friend stayed with the patient and she shared a fond memory she had. She reminisced how at her wedding with her ex-husband, her in-laws had danced and it was so beautiful watching them that everyone cleared the room to see them dance. Her friend found the song and they played the song the patient and her husband had danced to at her wedding as she passed in their presence of her angel nurse and lifelong advocate. This nurse's own Grandmother had died alone in a nursing home at the height of the first wave from COVID-19 when no one was allowed to visit the dying or sick. The fact that she was able to offer this extraordinary gift of herself to her ex-husband's mother after her own tragic loss is what makes her the epitome of the DAISY Award. Compassionate, caring, advocate - attributes of a DAISY Nurse in spirit, action, and service to patients and others.
