Emma was nominated by faculty on the basis of an experience she shared in a reflection paper which she submitted for her capstone course. Her reflection exemplifies the type of nurse Emma is:
One situation in which I displayed patient-centered care was during the third semester clinical with a very ill cancer patient. The patient had several drains on her body because she had so much fluid built up in her abdomen and no one was explaining to her why she needed these drains.
She was rude to me at first, but then I realized it was because she was so frustrated with her care and situation. To build a relationship with her, I began going in her room more frequently, even when she was not my patient. We started having great conversations about nursing and TV shows she liked to watch. On our last day of clinical, after I grabbed all my things, I went into her room. She had a big grin on her face when I walked in. I told her it was our last day on the floor and that I would miss seeing her. She said the same and wished me all the best. I felt like I was able to connect with her in ways other staff members did not, so I think I was able to give her the care she deserved.
