Margaret: Professional. Caring. Calm. Efficient. Organized. Smart. Holistic. Graceful. Dignified. I have had far too many opportunities to be a patient. It has given me real-life perspective in addition to being an advanced practice nurse with 40 years in nursing. The majority of nurses do great work. Like anywhere, there are always a few bad apples. There are also times when someone stands out. Margaret stands out. She has a “Healer’s touch”.

Margaret is a professional and looks it. She is caring as seen by going the extra mile, remembering little details, and following up on them. She is efficient and organized in her gentle, quiet manner. She is obviously quite intelligent, both in knowledge and her clinical skills. She did the most thorough physical assessment I have ever had a nurse do, especially at the beginning of a busy shift. Done quickly, she exits as if all is good and there is no hurry. Holistic, she has the ability to integrate things simultaneously – not “multitasking” where people run around doing all their tasks without seeing the person. While she works with equipment, she asks about how You are. She teaches while doing. Giving medication, she reminds you what it is and what to expect. No rattling down a list of bullet points, but a moment on one important part, applicable to you. Her natural and calm manner commands respect. Grace and dignity are visible, with compassion to provide reassurance and comfort, so needed for me.

Nurses have unreasonable expectations of them. There is always just one more thing “they” can do. It adds up. Nurses ran back and forth countless times. I never saw anyone standing around with nothing to do. These are the times we live in. But these times take a toll on nurses. It slowly chips away, until they aren’t the same. They can do more and be faster, but often at the expense of quality.

I didn’t see that in anyone and especially not Margaret. In the midst of chaos, there she is, calmly, quietly, and efficiently managing to do more, as if effortlessly. And just as fast, but in a dignified and calm way that doesn’t appear rushed. She has let the unreasonable demands look reasonable and manageable. She has not let it turn her into something she is not. She stands out. But most of all, she has” A Healer’s Touch”.
