Dr. Kubik provided the successful connection between inspiring and implementing the multiple components required to bring a new vision into a successful reality.
I am writing to nominate Dr. Marti Kubik for the "Out of the Box Thinking" Daisy Award in the School of Nursing. Marti Kubik Ph.D., RN Associate Professor, is the Director of Global Programming for the School of Nursing. It is her uniquely innovative and expert work in global health that has inspired this nomination.

Dr. Kubik embodies the ability to hold a steadfast global perspective in all aspects of her work. It is through her 'out of the box thinking' that embraces opportunities and inclusivity for international nursing experiences that I had the privilege of working in partnership with her. In 2013, I informally shared a vision for an APRN women's health practicum in Salvador, Brazil. Dr Kubik provided unlimited mentorship and acted as a vision champion in bringing the idea to SoN leadership. She initiated a collaborative DNP faculty process, successfully finding consensus across specialties for two new studies abroad options embedded in the existing APRN curriculum. Dr. Kubik provided the successful connection between inspiring and implementing the multiple components required to bring a new vision into a successful reality. In January and March of 2016, study abroad practicums in Brazil and Honduras provided over two thousand international clinic hours for twenty-one DNP students representing 3 APRN specialties.

Dr. Kubik's global perspective enriches the School of Nursing, but perhaps more importantly, it challenges faculty to integrate relevant international experiences into workable programs. She is a fearless promoter of respectful and safe student cultural immersion in all levels of nursing education. Her work demonstrates the creative utilization of available resources in study abroad experiences regardless of the obstacles found in international negotiations, language challenges, and a scarcity of resources. She finds uniquely creative ways to deepen student perspectives and reflections while in-country and promotes the holistic concept that health care happens within the context of relationships, beliefs, and culture. I highly recommend Marti for her creative excellence in envisioning and promoting unique global health opportunities and inspiring others to do the same. Her years of experience in thinking outside of the box globally deserve recognition.

I had the privilege of co-leading eleven Doctor of Nursing practice students on a study abroad experience in Honduras in March of this year with Marti. Marti is a visionary thinker who truly appreciates and understands the significance of an international experience for our nursing students, whether at the undergraduate or graduate level. She has been leading nursing students from the University of Minnesota on the Honduras experience for six years. Dr. Kubik appreciates the fine nuances of each level of nursing practice and works tirelessly to provide a safe, stimulating study abroad experience.
Of particular note, was the novel way in which Dr. Kubik encouraged students to reflect on their experiences in a country that, although lacking many basic resources, effectively utilizes the resources and systems available to offer organized, community-centered public health services to its residents. She facilitated students' ability to link their experiences abroad with their knowledge of health disparities, health literacy, and health care delivery in their emerging roles as nurse practitioners and Doctor of Nursing Practice. She stimulated students' creativity to develop health literate engagement activities with people of all ages to promote health. Students were able to process information and apply theoretical knowledge out of place.

Marti is passionate about international health and readily communicates that passion to students who enthusiastically participated in the myriad experiences created for them through Dr. Kubik's collaboration with Hombro a Hombro in Honduras. Marti fully embraces the richness of diversity in learning and engaging in an international setting. She effectively stimulates students to translate their international experience into the enrichment of their developing clinical and interactional skills.
