Stephanie Mitchell was nominated by a patient who was air-lifted to Iowa City with a life-threatening situation. The woman walked into the ER with complications after having a thyroidectomy. She was suffering pain and swelling in her neck and was having problems swallowing. Stephanie and the rest of the ER team quickly identified the severity of the situation, arranged a CT scan, and intubated her before the flight. The woman was told later that if she had waited to seek help she may not have survived.
This wasn’t the first interaction between the patient and Stephanie. The woman remembered meeting Stephanie previously during pulmonary rehab sessions and later when the patient’s mother passed away at the hospital.
