On Thanksgiving Day, my family received a call from the Mid Coast Senior Health Center that mom was not feeling well and she was going to the ER as a precaution. An hour later a call from Dr. T changed the course of our day. Major Stroke, inoperable, and prognosis was not good given underlying conditions. In a matter of seconds, the conversation in our household turned from what football game to watch to end of life care. The next five days were filled with tears, silence, and a few laughs as we remembered old times. I could go on and thank so many people that made this time easier for our family. Thank you all for your kind words, empathy, and compassion.

Out of all the shining stars, I would like to nominate Cassandra "KC" Fairfield, RN for the Daisy Award. I was truly amazed by the care that she provided. Always looking for signs of distress and providing comfort. Caressing mom's face and gently holding her hand. Speaking softly and letting her know everything was ok. Even making sure her body positioning was just perfect. I found great comfort that mom was in KC's care. Not only did she focus on her patient, but she was also there for the family. A bowl of snacks every morning and an emphatic ear whenever it was needed. Her commitment to the patient and family was embodied by her practice (compassion and respect for dignity).

Thank you, KC, for making this difficult time a little easier and sharing the journey. You helped reduce pain and suffering thru compassion and creating a connection. You made a difference and I will be forever thankful.
