Many patients describe their nurses as “angels” and state that their experience was traumatic, but that their nurse helped them cope.
The DAISY Award celebrates exceptional and compassionate care. The Charlotte Metro SANE team cares for one of the most vulnerable populations seen at Atrium. They provide examinations to patients recently affected by domestic violence and sexual assault. This nurse-led team provides 24/7/365 coverage to nine Atrium Health facilities in the Charlotte region. It is comprised of 10 nurses who work in various nursing positions for Atrium health but have a passion for victims of crime. For 7 of the 10 members, they hold full-time positions throughout the Atrium system. All of their call for the SANE program is in addition to their regular worked hours.
The SANE team represents highly skilled nurses who exam patients after sexual assault and domestic violence-related non-fatal strangulations. They provide a full head to toe exam, compassionate care when eliciting a forensic-medical interview, careful documentation of injuries, photo documentation of injuries, medications to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, follow-up appointments with community resources, forensic evidence collection for law enforcement, and courtroom testimony regarding their findings. The SANE team’s motto is healing begins with them.
Sexual assault patients are not surveyed for patient experience regarding their care, but when completing follow-up phone calls, many patients describe their nurses as “angels” and state that their experience was traumatic, but that their nurse helped them cope. Many ask that their nurse be thanked and are very grateful for having a kind hand to hold.
Listening to victims recount their attack is very stressful and it takes a very determined and empathetic nurse to care for these special patients. The SANE team networks with rape crisis centers, law enforcement, community advocates, and prosecutors to help patients recover from their crime. In 2020, the 10-person SANE team (who mostly have full-time positions elsewhere) saw 316 sexual assault patients and 226 non-fatal strangulations. The volume of DV had an increase of 30% during the pandemic. SANEs gave direct patient care and continued to support victims with lethality assessments, orders of protection from magistrates, and careful documentation for patients so that law enforcement had a clear understanding of the crimes inflicted. These exams average four hours of care provided. The Charlotte Metro SANE embodies exceptional, compassionate care.
