When I think of a Nurse, and what it means to receive a DAISY Award, Deanna Tuggle covers it all.
When I think of a Nurse, and what it means to receive a DAISY Award, Deanna Tuggle covers it all. She is kind, compassionate, empathetic, and always has her patient’s best interests at heart. Not only is she a bomb Nurse, but an even better co-worker. As a relatively new ICU nurse, I had my very first code (ever) 9 months into coming to ICU. Deanna was there to answer all my questions and help me with whatever I needed. A few weeks later, she again demonstrated her incredible leadership when a patient (that wasn’t mine) coded. I was the only person in the room with free hands to start recording time. I had never done this before and the code sheet is pretty scary at first. Deanna made sure to walk me through every step, calmly and organized. She kept checking back to make sure I was okay and doing things correctly.
A handful of people come to mind when I think of who I WOULDN'T want standing there because, in a high-energy environment, it can be hard for someone to teach, and easier if they just did it for me instead. But with her guidance, I felt so confident coming out of that code knowing next time, I’ll know exactly what to do when keeping time. Her exact words to me when I said I had never done this before, were “That’s okay, this is how you learn.” As newer nurses, we all have “firsts.” Something as small as a code sheet might seem small to most people, but is a scary first for us newer nurses. Deanna is the Nurse you want next to you during a code and honestly just during any shift.
