With the highest level of compassion and care, these nurses have truly helped me to heal
Amidst the backdrop of COVID-19, these nurses managed to leave their personal baggage at the door and focus entirely on the care of their patients. Each time they would enter my room, they beamed with a smile asking me how I was feeling. The ‘gift of a smile’ makes all the difference to a patient confined to in bed without the comfort of family by their side during this global pandemic. As I spoke further with individual nurses, I learned that many of them had young children at home whom they had to ‘teach’ during the same day. Serving as both professional ‘nurses’ and ‘teachers’, they managed to deliver the highest possible care.
I was admitted to the hospital on many occasions including hip pain, COVID-19, and pneumonia. Last week, I had a full hip replacement, and the ‘code of ethics’ and kindness rippled down from the 5th floor to the surgical recovery team. In my professional job, I work tireless hours to walk in minefields of the world to alleviate the suffering caused by landmines. It was such a blessing to have this same level of kindness reciprocated to me as I suffered from pain. With the highest level of compassion and care, these nurses have truly helped me to heal so that I may once again walk on behalf of others in the name of peace. The City of San Rafael is the namesake of St. Raphael, the Angel of Healing. Kaiser San Rafael truly lives up to its’ name and their ‘Angels on the 5th Floor’.
