Once the patient was admitted, Caroline took the garment out of the trash and had it laundered the next day.
Caroline Fortier is Baystate Noble Hospital’s first recipient of the DAISY. Caroline was nominated by a nursing supervisor who shared:
“Caroline was caring for a patient who had recently decided to go on hospice care for end-stage cancer. The patient’s son, who was at the bedside, asked his mother if he could throw away her soiled nightgown. The patient was hesitant, however, ultimately told her son to do whatever he wanted with it. Her son threw the nightgown in the trash. Caroline observed the patient’s hesitation to throw away the nightgown. Once the patient was admitted, Caroline took the garment out of the trash and had it laundered the next day. Caroline brought the item of clothing back to the patient who was then on 2North. The patient was very thankful and went on to say that the nightgown had been a gift from her husband 30 years earlier. She cherished this nightgown and had kept it in pristine condition. Her children had even offered to get her new nightgowns, but she never wanted to part with it. She kept that nightgown because of the memories associated with it and because it was a cherished gift from her husband.”
