Sherry had such a calming way of dealing with him, and in turn, it made him calmer about what was being done at the time.
My husband is in the latter stages of dementia. He fractured his right hip. After surgery, he was transferred to a rehab center, then a month later he was sent back to Baylor Irving with a UTI and sepsis. All of the nursing staff were very aware of his needs as it is no longer within his ability to communicate effectively. For two days Sherry Martin was his nurse on the 7am-7pm shift. She was so kind to him knowing that his pain threshold was very low. While she administered all of the necessary medications and blood checks, he cursed and tried to jerk away. She had such a calming way of dealing with him, and in turn, it made him calmer about what was being done at the time.
She took the time to listen to my concerns about his lack of progress. It was decided that he needed a midline to continue his course of treatment at rehab. Sherry considered my concerns about his adverse reaction and needles and explained that his arm would be deadened prior to inserting the line. I so much appreciated her genuine concern for her patient. She is such a kind, caring person, and credit not only to her profession but also to Baylor Irving.
