Erin is recognized for the very positive attitude she demonstrates towards her staff and her patients. Erin is a critical thinker with excellent situational awareness. She is calm and confident and demonstrates strong leadership. Erin was approached to work in ICU during the COVID-19 high census. Erin has a critical care background and is known for her critical care nursing skills and professional approach to patient care. Erin was recruited to work in ICU to care for COVID-19 positive patients. Erin said yes to the request and with flexibility and agility changed her schedule worked nights and embraced the opportunity to support her colleagues in the dire need of highly skilled ICU nurses. Erin was pleased to have the opportunity to work in the ICU. The ICU team at LPH said “Erin is an excellent nurse and it was amazing to have her here to help us care for sick patients with the COVID-19 virus. We are so grateful to have her help.”
Erin Brix preoperative-PACU charge nurse at Broomfield Hospital identified an opportunity to improve practice and reduce cost while improving the preoperative nasal decolonization swab process used to prevent surgical site infections (SSI). She obtained surgeon and product analysis approval to assess the efficiency of the current SSI bundle. Erin was proactive in collaborating with the UCHealth materials management and value analysis management team. She realized that the opportunity would require a team to support her efforts to ensure that the investigation of a new product would be worth time and effort. Erin recruited her preoperative team and influenced them enough to embrace the importance of the analysis in order to identify a new SSI swab product that would improve user compliance and have a potential cost savings component to the SSI bundle. Erin influenced participation with her colleagues by simplifying the administration of the product with the patient. The success of this analysis has led to a strong support of the value analysis team to convert to the new product. This project is now in the process of expanding as a system-wide conversation project. An added bonus is an anticipated savings of approximately $100,000.00 for all of UCHealth. Erin Brix was nominated in 2020 as one of the Nightingale nominees and accepted her nomination at the 2020 award ceremony.
