Jeff is a great example as a new grad for his assessment skills and for going above and beyond to find out about a sick admitted patient who has no family at the bedside during these times.
One morning a patient had been admitted for hypoxia, respiratory failure, and multifocal pneumonia. Report was given to Jeff Mejia who then went to do a head-to-toe assessment of his patient, found that the patient was nonverbal with garbled speech and had right-sided deficits to the right arm and leg. Jeff saw that there was a CVA history and called the family to see if any deficits were from a CVA. After speaking with the family and discovering the patient had no deficits and was walking and talking prior to admission, Jeff looked in the chart and saw that the client was assessed prior by the doctor and staff to show moving all extremities. Calls were made to the admitting doctors in the emergency department and Code Stroke was initiated and the patient went right to CT scan. It was found that there was a left middle cerebral infarct. Neuro and interventional radiology were notified and sent for intervention. Jeff is a great example as a new grad for his assessment skills and for going above and beyond to find out about a sick admitted patient who has no family at the bedside during these times. He acknowledged abnormality and advocated for the patient. His quick and thorough assessment may have made a difference in the patient’s life and to those family members who trust us with their loved ones.
