What stood out to me was Luisa’s genuine concern for Mom’s best interests which led her to constantly seek better solutions for her case.
It’s one thing to do your job correctly, but quite another to heal someone who is suffering. During the 29 days my mother spent as a patient, we were blessed to have many good nurses, one of whom is named Luisa, or Lulu. When I asked Mom what we could say about her favorite nurse Luisa, her aphasia prevented her from finding the right expression, but Mom said, “It’s something about Perfect.”

What stood out to me was Luisa’s genuine concern for Mom’s best interests which led her to constantly seek better solutions for her case. For example, when the wound nurse had completed her work, Luisa went running after her to have her come back and give an expert opinion on a different wound that Luisa herself was dressing. Again, when a PT came who specialized in caring for lymphedema patients, Luisa asked her to teach her how to wrap Mom’s limbs better. Again, when dialysis time came around, Luisa was there asking questions to learn more and understand Mom’s condition and how to help her.

When Mom took a turn for the worse, Luisa said to me, “Is she going to get better?” showing her true concern for this patient she wanted to see improve. The two last days before discharge Luisa was assigned to Mom, much to everyone’s delight. Mom knew that Luisa cared about her and would make sure she was well taken care of. Luisa spent hours explaining to our family how to care for Mom at home, and all is going well still, 2 weeks after discharge. We wanted Luisa to know that mom and her family remember her smile and her love, with gratitude. To our surprise, we learned that she had only been nursing for 6 months. We would have thought, given her skill and intelligence, that it was much longer. May this be the beginning of a long career of compassion and healing! Thank you, Luisa!
