However, she did her job (and then some) with grace, compassion, patience, and attention to every detail.
I suffer from certain disorders that cause intense anxiety. Coupled with a rushed early morning, worry about my procedure, fear due to COVID19 policies, and the fact that I could only take part of my morning medications per my physician’s request, I arrived at the facility feeling full of anxiety and fear that I would be alone while prepping for my surgery. I could not have been more wrong. When Paula brightly introduced herself, I told her I was very anxious. My pre-op nurse, Sophia, was about to set up an IV, and Paula jumped right into action. She worked in tandem with Sophia to distract me and keep me calm while the IV was being inserted; she kept my anxiety at bay. She held her hand on my arm throughout the entire process, refocusing me when I intermittently got scared and looked at the IV. She made me feel safe and comfortable. I had forgotten to take one of my medications that morning, and the anesthesiologist agreed to administer it by IV. She advocated for me, asking several people to make sure I had gotten my medicine. In the times of COVID19 where family members cannot accompany patients to procedures, it is nurses like Paula who are a shining example of the role nurses can play in advocacy for their patients; she demonstrated that she is willing to step up to the plate and face the challenge that healthcare workers worldwide are also going through. However, she did her job (and then some) with grace, compassion, patience, and attention to every detail. Every question I had - and there were quite a few - she answered honestly and with loving-kindness. She did everything she could to make me feel safe and cared for, which I absolutely was. It would have been no different if my family member would have been there; she handled me as such. All of my concerns and fears went out of the window; she completely transformed my outlook on my procedure, and I am deeply grateful. By the time I was ready to be wheeled back for my surgery, I was laughing, smiling, and free of anxiety. She treated me with dignity, respect, and kindness, and just with her demeanor and work ethic, she was able to aid me in having an excellent experience at the Sugar Land Surgery Center. You can tell she really loves her vocation because she is truly an angel of a nurse. Thank you so much, Paula!
