Bea would give a friendly hello and bright smile every time she walked onto the unit.
Bea Nagel has worked for Pine Rest for 37+ years, dedicating her career to serving others. She initially earned her LPN degree at Pine Rest School of Nursing in 1974. She described the time following as her favorite years at Pine Rest, where patients stayed for several months, and they were able to form genuine therapeutic relationships and see them get well. In 1985, she obtained her RN degree and since then has worked on several different units in several different capacities. Since 2001, she has worked in Utilization Management overseeing Aspen and the Older Adult Unit. The following are comments from her coworkers:
I first met Bea while working evenings on Aspen. She would frequent the unit to get the “good ice water.” During her visits to the unit, she would interact with nursing staff to see how the unit is doing and check on staff. Bea would give a friendly hello and bright smile every time she walked onto the unit. Bea was a delight at the Aspen staff meetings. She was terrific at communicating insurance questions or concerns and proactive at preventing denials.
In addition, her unique sense of humor contributed to a cohesive and fun team experience. Even though we were in separate rooms, I could often hear her talk with insurance providers and “professionally” present her case for continued coverage or for an initial authorization (usually ECT). She would use humor, kindness, and a good knowledge base to coach the reviewers into seeing the need for authorization. I remember when I first started at PR in UM; Bea made me feel like I was a part of the UM department for years on my very first day. Very warm and friendly, and the best sense of humor I could ask for in a coworker and friend. Bea is the person who encouraged me to come work at UM. She spoke highly of the department in addition to the advocacy for the patient population we serve. Bea helped show me a different type of nursing care through the Pine Rest Mission. She shows empathy, honesty, and skilled quality during her work. Bea also shows compassion towards her fellow co-workers. She always makes sure if we are fed, need help, and are overall doing well. Bea embodies what it is to be a nurse as well as serving others.
