The attention and care Brooke was giving were so profound. She appeared as if she was able to absorb the sadness from the patient, if only for that time.
Compassion and empathy, two of the most important and overlooked values we expect to see from our healthcare services. However, this past Sunday I saw both in the rarest form in the Emergency Department. Brooke Moore, RN displayed the most compassionate care and patient empathy I had witnessed in some time. As she was not only performing lifesaving treatment for this patient, but her care was above par in compassion and empathy. Brooke was caring for a young woman who had been injured in a horrific traffic accident. The young woman did have significant injuries, but she was stabilized and doing well physically. In addition to being injured, something much worse had happened to this patient. Her young child passed away in the accident as well. The patient, you can imagine, immediately began the grieving process. Brooke was in the process of washing blood from the patient’s hair and actively listening to her weep from sadness. The attention and care Brooke was giving were so profound. She appeared as if she was able to absorb the sadness from the patient, if only for that time. I witnessed her simply offering her attention and caring touch. Brooke is clearly an asset to the healthcare team at Baptist Health, and I hope she is recognized for being so.
