One nurse found out that she liked the mobile game Pokémon Go and took her out in her wheelchair to catch Pokémon around the hospital.
Over the past year, the MICU has experienced the repeated trauma of dealing with extremely sick and dying patients caused by the pandemic and beyond. One of our patients, who has been in the unit with us for nearly one hundred days, has brought our unit together and helped restore our hope. This young patient, whom many of us related to either as a peer, sibling, or child, was very ill with lymphoma. She even suffered a cardiac arrest during her time with us.
On that day, there was not a dry eye in the unit, but she lived and with each passing day got a little bit better. Each day, as she slowly improved both physically and mentally, the nurses rallied around to encourage her to keep going. This included playing her favorite music at night before bed and then waking up to a dance party to start the day. Make-up, nail polish, and hair bands were bought and carefully applied. Nurses gave her facials, washed her hair with real shampoo, and gave her manicures to make her feel like a 23-year-old girl again. One nurse found out that she liked the mobile game Pokémon Go and took her out in her wheelchair to catch Pokémon around the hospital. Other nurses brought in coloring books, playdough, and balloons so they could play games while also engaging in activities to help with fine motor skills.
It was not just that these nurses bought her these things, but they also sat in her room and colored with her, spoke to her about music, TV, and their lives which made the patient realize she did not just have nurses, but friends. Activities that the everyday person accepts as normal were given back to this young girl to make her feel alive again and encourage her to keep going. The nurses of the MICU who touch death every day got to see someone overcome the greatest odds and persevere, inspiring all of us to also keep going. After being in our unit for just shy of 100 days, she was able to leave us and return to the oncology unit to keep up with her treatment. While it is sad to see her go, it is nice to see hope again in the eyes of the MICU nurses.
