Chandler is the nurse that we will tell our daughter stories about for years to come.
Our family first met her as a nurse orientee. She was taking care of our daughter after her first surgery, which as you can imagine was a stressful time for us. Even as an orientee, she had a subtle kindness and sweetness to her that we would get to know and cherish. Every nurse that has been assigned to care for her has been tremendous and we appreciate and acknowledge all of them, but Chandler is the nurse that we will tell our daughter stories about for years to come. When you have a child who has been in the NICU for 8 months, there are clearly a lot of ups and downs, emotionally, mentally, and medically. For us, we are parents who work 3 jobs between the 2 of us, yet we came to the hospital every day faithfully. It is the hours that you are not there that give you the most anxiety and stress. Knowing someone like Chandler was there to check on her every day she worked was a blessing. She was amazing with my daughter when she was assigned to her, but even on the days she did not have her she would go above and beyond with family-centered care. She was always professional, positive, and supportive of both our needs and my daughter's needs. If one of us had to go to work and she was “fussy,” she would always play with her or hold her to soothe her. If she had a bad day of spitting up her feeds, she would wash her clothes and lay them out to dry. She never had an issue with getting on the floor and working on developmental skills with her. It was very normal for us as parents to check the NICview application and see her there even though we knew she wasn’t assigned to her on that specific day. Every time she would see one of us, she would come in and check on us and give us stories of what she had done that day. She is at a very early point in her career and has the temperament, positivity, and personal skills that will ensure a long and nurturing career that will impact families for years to come. We could never thank her enough.
