Pediatric Emergency received an 11-year-old female. Shortly after her arrival, Detail Officer was called, and a Code Assist called. I went over to the Pediatric ER and this little 11 year was kicking and screaming and swearing, no fewer than 6 people were in the room trying to subdue her. The physician ordered medication and was being administered IM by two of the pediatric ER nurses. One of the nurses was Carolyn Fuller.

Never once did she react to the violent behavior of this child. Carolyn spoke softly and with purpose, was able to give her oral doses of Seroquel and the patient began to become cooperative. Carolyn offered her cereal, and the patient was grateful. The next day, I spoke to Carolyn and told her how impressed I was that she never lost her composure. Carolyn started to cry and said this is a child that was sexually abused by her mother’s boyfriend. The mother took her boyfriend’s side. The child is now in the custody of DCF. When Carolyn took her to the floor, the child hugged Carolyn. Carolyn felt this is the only kindness and caring she had received in a long time. This is a sweet and sad story. And a lesson for all of us, that we need to look beyond the behavior and the appearance and treat the child. Carolyn did that and provided much-needed comfort to a hurting child. Carolyn exhibits caring and professionalism daily in her nursing and I am proud to work with her.
