You could see the mother’s anxiety level come down quite a bit as she laughed and smile with Whitney.
Whitney Broadbent and I attended a primary C-section delivery, and she took excellent care of the mother and baby. As everyone was preparing for the delivery, Whitney went to talk with the mother and verify her preferences for the baby. For example, her pediatrician, breastfeeding, and routine newborn medications. Mom was very anxious and teary-eyed because she had been laboring all day, but the doctor suggested doing a C-section because her labor failed to progress. Whitney could tell the mother was upset and told her husband would be coming to sit with her soon.

In the meantime, Whitney asked the mother if she wanted her to sit with her and hold her hand until her husband showed up and the mother agreed. Whitney then proceeded to chat with the mother and asked how she chose her daughter’s name, what outfit she picked for the baby to go home in, and the first meal she wanted to have after delivery. The mother answered the questions and they chatted like two friends. You could see the mother’s anxiety level come down quite a bit as she laughed and smile with Whitney. Taking the time to sit and talk with the mother to get her mind off of the surgery made a big difference to that mother and she was so appreciative.

After the baby was born, Whitney took the time to explain everything that we were doing with the baby and give the parents frequent updates on her condition to ease their minds. Once the baby was stable, she placed the baby skin-to-skin on the mother while the doctor finished the surgery. In the recovery room, she also took extra time out to help the mother with breastfeeding. Whitney’s kind and caring acts definitely proved she is worthy of the DAISY nomination. She did her best to try and calm the mother’s nerves and was truly compassionate, supportive, and empathetic.
