And at this moment in the ED, Duane allowed me to be vulnerable and really let all of my stress and frustrations out within my tears in that 5 minutes.
I came into the ED in the late afternoon/early evening for severe abdominal pain via ambulance-my first ever ambulance ride. As I arrived, I was placed into a semi-private room across from a room that looked very familiar. As I was greeted by Duane, he was very friendly and prompt, explained the plan very thoroughly, and made sure I was as comfortable as possible given the circumstances. I became very emotional after he left. The room across the hall was actually the room I was in with my at the time 6 month old son who was nearly killed in 2017. That was the room we were given the devastating news in and I was having flashbacks from that nightmare of a day in 2017. In the midst of my emotional breakdown, Duane had come back into my room to check on me and noticed me crying. He pulled a stool up, sat down and held my hand (after sanitizing, of course), and let me pour my entire heart out in that 5 minutes. Being a mom with a now 4-year-old kiddo with special needs-you have to be strong. And at this moment in the ED, Duane allowed me to be vulnerable and really let all of my stress and frustrations out within my tears in that 5 minutes. I am a healthcare worker myself-a nursing assistant, and in my 9 years of working in healthcare, I have never been treated or witnessed such compassion in patient care. Duane’s patience with me, his knowledge about nursing, and his bedside manner is something special. Duane goes above and beyond expectations and is the best nurse I have ever come across in my entire nursing career and within my 25 years of life. Duane is an excellent addition to Carle’s emergency department and he is a model of what all nurses should strive to be. Duane will never know what his 5 minutes of conversation and support to me during such a sad and emotional time meant and I will never forget the care I received last night. Excellent job, Duane, you are amazing!
