The patient's wife had told Jeremy of his love of the Beatles, and so Jeremy provided a playlist of soft instrumental renditions of Beatles songs.
I just walked the wife and adult daughter of a patient out of the hospital, and they were very expressive of their thanks for his care throughout the long course. The patient passed very quietly with excellent control of symptoms. What was especially striking to me, however, was the care provided today by nurse Jeremy Borrero, above and beyond nursing per se. The patient's wife had told Jeremy of his love of the Beatles, and so Jeremy provided a playlist of soft instrumental renditions of Beatles songs. While the wife was at the bedside telling her husband how much she loved him, "Yesterday" was in the background. When he passed, a piano version of "Let It Be" was playing. That extra level of attention to meaningfulness was so remarkable. Jeremy also engaged the patient's wife in a kind of life review that allowed her to honor the journey to this moment and help her to take leave. When she said how much she wished her husband could be with her and walked to him to make a final goodbye, she did so sweetly to the sounds of "I Want to Hold Your Hand." Nurses often use music in wonderful and creative ways, but Jeremy really hit the right note with this case today.
