Emily made the child feel safe and protected, as she feared her mother greatly.
While the story is complicated, the devotion to the patient is obvious. A 7-year old child came into the ED with her very ill father. He had COVID and was sick enough to the point of needing ICU admission. The child was also evaluated and stayed in the ED, because her mother really was not involved in her upbringing at the time. The mother had a history of being abusive towards the child, and Child Protective Services were involved in her case. The mother attempted to come to the ED and take her child, as her father was too sick to protect his daughter. It was during this time that Emily made the child feel safe and protected, as she feared her mother greatly. Emily stayed with the child and even arranged for her paternal grandmother to come in from Nebraska to care for her while her father was a patient in the ICU. The arrangements ultimately took hours to make, but the child was kept safe and placed with family that loved her. Emily showed bravery, compassion, and dedication toward this little girl who otherwise would not have had an advocate.
