We all cried because even though she did not know us through the years nor did she know my dad on a personal level, she came to pay respects.
My father was burned earlier this year. He was in the BICU for over a month when he succumbed to his injuries from his burn. The team of doctors and nurses were phenomenal during his stay in BICU. I live 20 minutes from UTMB in Galveston which has a Burn Unit as well and then I met Joni. She was the charge nurse and was so kind to us. She was very attentive to my dad's care and was also one to just stop in and check on me, my mom, and my sister. We rotated in and out. On the last day, she came in with the most precious gift and a huge hug to us but again appeared on the day of my dad's service in Midland. There was one name that we recognized in the guest book, and we all cried because even though she did not know us through the years nor did she know my dad on a personal level, she came to pay respects. THIS is what going above and way beyond is all about. I have no way to get in touch with her other than to call the hospital, but she has other people to care for now and I know she is caring for them just the same. She will forever have a place in our hearts as the best nurse ever.
