Christine showed him so much compassion, talked with him, and put the caseworkers in touch with him.
I want to recognize Christine Smith, RN, for the DAISY Award. Christine is the kind of nurse that I would like to have as my personal nurse if I came to Medical City North Hills. Recently, I observed Christine with a patient that most of the hospital staff would term as "high maintenance". He came to our department for a procedure and had to spend an extended period of time before he could be transferred to another floor. Christine was his nurse for the procedure and I saw her calm him from the temperament we had heard he had on the floor.
After the procedure, Christine was his nurse in our holding area for several hours. During those hours I saw and heard their conversations about life situations that had brought that patient to MCNH. The patient was just in town to prepare to get divorced, he knew nothing of the area or the services available to him, he was losing his health insurance in a few days and he had just been told he needed bypass surgery. Christine showed him so much compassion, talked with him, and put the caseworkers in touch with him to help since he was a veteran and he could use veteran benefits. It was so tearful when the patient asked Christine how bad would it hurt to die if he did nothing.
Christine cares about all her patients and I am glad I had the opportunity to see her show so much compassion for this man. Christine is always willing to help her team out in any way possible. She recently updated our nurse resource binders for the whole department. She is also the first person I ask for help when any organizational task needs to be done. I know she will do it quickly and completely! Thanks, Christine!
