Rosario spoke and truly listened to every person: the family, the patient, the young son, mother, ex-husband, sister-in-law, and friend. She gave them a beautiful gift.
RWJ has been blessed with the addition of this nurse who joined our team last year. Rosario is soft-spoken and yet confident, practical and compassionate. She puts people at ease at a terrible time in their lives, gently explaining the signs and symptoms and what they mean for the dying process. She reassures caregivers that they’re doing a beautiful job and reassures patients that she will help them, to ease any suffering. I learned recently that Rosario is young enough to be my daughter and that blew me away. For such a young person, she seems to have the seasoning of several decades. And she has a great depth of character. She is a gift.

There was a very young hospice patient out of Rosario’s territory where she was assigned to the case. It was not a typical hospice case. The level of intervention needed, and at times demanded, was something that was equivalent to hospital level of care. Rosario, although able to verbalize to staff that it was an extremely demanding and challenging case, never let go of her patience and compassion for each and every family member involved. She spoke and truly listened to every person: the family, the patient, the young son, mother, ex-husband, sister-in-law, and friend. She even listed to us – her coworkers – vent and unload when it came to this difficult and trying case. She gave them a beautiful gift. She couldn’t stop the patient from dying, but she helped ease the mental and physical suffering of the patient and of all those who loved her.
