I am so grateful that God chose you to be on my team of nurses!
When I rounded on patient S, she raved about Megan Mendel. She stated, “she’s freaking amazing, you’re blessed to have her, and I can’t even explain except to say she’s been a huge part of my recovery”. S proceeded to tell me about something Megan did for her.
This patient was in a motorcycle crash, a bad one, where she had to have a traumatic leg amputation, multiple surgeries and was in MetroHealth for close to a month. Her hair had knots, dried blood, and was a mess. The patient’s daughter is a cosmetologist. Megan worked with the patients’ daughter to take her to the “7C Trauma salon.” Megan found a wheelchair that reclined back and put the patient in it. Megan then found trash bags and cut holes in them to create a poncho/drape for the patient to wear so she wouldn’t get wet. Megan and the patients’ daughter then wheeled the patient into the 7C shower room, reclined her wheelchair back, and took her to “the salon”. They were able to shampoo and condition all of her hair and get all of the dried blood and tangles out. They then brushed her hair and put it in a French braid so the patient would not have to worry about it. When I rounded on the patient, the patient told me this simple act “felt so so good!” After listening to this patient rave about Megan, the care she provided, and how she went above and beyond, I gave the patient a blank thank-you note and asked her to tell Megan herself. Attached is a copy of that card which I mailed to Megan’s home for the patient. NOTE FROM PATIENT… “I am so grateful that God chose you to be on my team of nurses! You pay attention to the smallest details and sometimes others don’t. The care you gave me is more than exceptional. This really must be your purpose in life to care for trauma survivors. Many blessings”.
