Monica implemented foot pump technology for the prevention of DVT/PE. She assured the safety of her patient.
Monica Thomas-Green, RN of the PACU, was assigned to care for our first limb lengthening procedure patient. Monica assessed and provided care for the patient. She was diligent in the review of post-op orders. Monica assured the patient was comfortable and that the patient remained stable. By using her critical thinking skills, she identified an order for DVT/PE prophylaxis that did not make sense. The patient was ordered TED stockings and SCDs, however had ACE wraps placed intraoperatively. Additionally, the patient had bilateral tibial fractures from surgery. Knowing that the patient was very high risk for PE Monica recognized that TED stockings and SCD sleeves were contraindicated for this patient and called the doctor recommending foot pumps instead of TEDs and SCD sleeves. This nurse implemented foot pump technology for the prevention of DVT/PE. She assured the safety of her patient. Additionally, placed the education GEM on the front of the chart for all care providers to review in order to assure continuity of care. Monica routinely goes above and beyond for her patients and colleagues. She is well respected amongst her peers.
