Kim has brought joy to the patients she has helped celebrate during their hospital stay.
For the nursing student or the novice nurse: Kim has pursued excellent patient care by passing along her clinical expertise in wound care. Kim is quick to encourage a nursing student or a new nurse to join her for a patient assessment or wound/ostomy intervention so she can pass along her knowledge and skills. She is patient, kind, and generous with her time. Her passion for her expertise is captured by those she is training and they are not quick to forget the knowledge she shares. You will often find a nursing student or novice nurse sharing, “she’s the Wound Care Nurse who taught me that! I’ve learned so much from her!”

For the patient celebrating their birthday while hospitalized: On more than one occasion, Kim has gone down to the gift shop, purchased a balloon or a birthday card, ran back up to the unit, and helped a patient celebrate their birthday. While nobody prefers to be in the hospital on their birthday, I know Kim has brought joy to the patients she has helped celebrate during their hospital stay.

For the patient with a new ostomy: Kim quickly develops a rapport with her patients which helps them adjust to their new life with an ostomy. Kim balances the compassion these new ostomates need in this challenging time in their life with the encouragement they need to begin participating in their own care. She is generous with her time, ensuring the patient’s questions are answered and their confidence is set to enter the world with their new stoma.

For the visitor that is lost in the hallway: Kim is willing to stop and help anyone who is looking lost on Loma Linda’s campus. She always stops and asks if they need assistance finding their destination. She goes above and beyond to ensure their success by walking them to their destination if it is a difficult place to find. She never overlooks an opportunity to help out in this way. Because providing care that is above and beyond the call of duty is normal for Kim, there are many more stories that can be shared. Kim is the kind of nurse we are all grateful to know, to work with, and to grow with.
