Andrea has gone above and beyond to provide me with the ability to care for my daughter and has given me the knowledge I need to be certain that my daughter is provided exemplary care.
Andrea has looked after my daughter since she was first transferred to LGI. She has always been compassionate and caring towards my daughter and I. When my daughter was going through cancer treatment, I always knew I could trust Andrea to be understanding of her condition and push to ensure she received the best care possible. I truly felt she would fight my corner and empower us as a family to understand C’s condition and her treatments. Andrea has gone above and beyond to provide me with the ability to care for my daughter and has given me the knowledge I need to be certain that my daughter is provided exemplary care.
There have been countless occasions where Andrea has supported me to help C overcome the battles she has faced. I know that I can always get an honest opinion and understanding from her, and that if she feels that things for C could be done in a different way she will be honest and tell me so. She has supported C through many issues, most recently when C had COVID she helped me to encourage her to take her first steps after being bed bound to give her the encouragement she needed to be back up and walking again. She also encouraged C to start drinking when she has never shown any interest in doing so. C holds her in such high esteem, she’s even cried when Andrea has had to go home because she wants to go to Andrea's house for a sleepover and meet her guinea pigs.
I have been there many times as Andrea has supported countless student nurses and newly qualified nurses to learn important aspects of their training. She explains things in a very clear way and supports them when she needs to. She is very patient and works tirelessly to ensure that all the people in her care are receiving the care they need. I truly feel like she has supported me emotionally through C’s journey, empowering me to continue through extremely difficult times with the support and passion that she has for her job and the children in her care.
Andrea has helped me when I have been unsure of procedures by providing me with the knowledge and reassurance I need to be able to provide the care for my daughter that she requires, such as assisting me with learning how to provide her tube feeds, change her nappies when she has had a catheter in, and delivering her medications. Andrea has supported me to encourage my daughter with her eating and drinking, which is a real struggle for C having gone from next to no fluid allowance to a really high fluid target. C regularly speaks fondly of Andrea, even though she has had to have some really unpleasant procedures under her care. She absolutely loves her! She has helped her with so much and has really helped her to feel safe with nurses and others in uniform.
Andrea will always be somebody who will be held in very high regard by myself, she is a truly exemplary nurse who embodies all of the Leeds way values in everything she does. I can confidently say that all of the children in Andrea's care hold a special place in her heart and that she really genuinely cares about their quality of life. She will do everything she can to make sure that our children have the happiest time possible in the hospital.
On a personal level, Andrea has supported me through lots of difficult times, including my daughter’s cancer treatment, her dialysis journey, and her transplant as well as issues in my personal life with a fair and honest approach to her work. I would like to acknowledge her accomplishments as a nurse; she is a real role model for those who are just starting their nursing careers.
